Winfree Academy Learners Embark Upon The Dream Express
|Lewisville| For the second year in a row, Winfree Academy learners were selected to Shop with a Cop in conjunction with the Dream Express. The Dream Express Christmas event, which took place December 15th, was hosted by Journey to Dream, a Lewisville-based non-profit whose mission is to support North Texas teens through the challenges they face. This year, officers from Lewisville, Flower Mound, and The Colony police departments shopped with a total of 45 teens from the Lewisville community. Amongst them, five students were from Winfree Academy.
“We love our Winfree students” Retired federal agent, teacher, and Journey to Dream Board Member Michelle Deaver says. “We are so glad that Winfree Academy has participated both years. Their students are really special to us and they form a unique bond with the officers.”
With 4-hour school days, Winfree Academy provides students the opportunity to work and attend high school at the same time. Winfree students who participated this year in “Shop for Cops” usually don’t get to shop for themselves around the holiday season due to their roles in supporting their families. “I would just be going to school and wouldn’t have been able to work to help my mom financially if it wasn’t for Winfree Academy. School is important to me and the fact that I can do both and be successful has helped my family tremendously,” Winfree student Max Kinchen says.
Shelby Beard, student from Winfree Lewisville Campus, celebrated this opportunity given to her by Journey to Dream to shop for her daughter instead of herself. “ Being at Winfree has given me the gift of confidence with myself that I haven’t always had and that alone has benefited not just me, but my daughter. Thank you Winfree Academy and Journey to Dream for giving this year to not only to bless myself but my family.”
