Winfree Academy Helps Families To Make The Season Bright

IRVING- For many, the holiday season is a time to gather with family and friends to enjoy a meal and unwrap gifts. Far too often, there are hundreds who go without and amongst those, families with children and teens tend to feel the biggest impact without toys or food. This holiday season Winfree Academy collected hundreds of unwrapped toys and ready-made food items to help serve over 80 families with food and presents over the holidays.

Winfree Academy has been serving North Texas and the DFW community for over 16 years. In February 2014, The Food Pantry was created at the Lewisville Campus to help alleviate the many challenges students, their families, and the community deal with on a consistent basis. To help those in need across all campuses and keep the pantry stocked up, the learners at Winfree held a canned food drive during the month of November on all six campuses. For an entire month, students, educators, parents, and the community donated to the canned food drive. Enough food was raised to feed 80 families over the holiday season.

"The food pantry has been a blessing for me and my family. When my mom lost her job it was the only way we could have food in the house until our assistance was approved,” a Food Pantry recipient expressed. “Thank you Winfree for feeding us.”

Because the pantry is not just for the students at Winfree Academy but also their families, its doors are always open to serve those in need that do not have access to food or suddenly find themselves on their own.

Along with feeding over 80 families, Winfree Academy conducted a December Toy Drive where over 100 unwrapped toys were collected and donated to over 100 kids in the Community. All toys donated were given to Santa Cops, Toys for Tots, Angel Tree, and other local organizations to distribute to families during the holidays.

Winfree Academy (WACS) meets the educational needs of high school learners, up to age 26, who prefer a non-traditional way of learning and thrive on individualized instruction. As a free public, charter school serving North Texas since 2000, WACS has graduated over 6,000 learners. For more information about Winfree Academy please visit www.winfreeacademy.com
