Public Information Requests

Winfree Academy Charter Schools recognizes that Texas law gives the public the right to access certain government records that are otherwise not exempted from disclosure, and that the law contains guidelines for the timeframe in which we must respond to requests for information. Please understand that, due to the current federal and state emergency declarations related to COVID-19 (the Coronavirus), our school’s normal school operations have been suspended and we are currently operating with a skeleton crew.

Moreover, on March 19, 2020, Governor Greg Abbott signed an order closing all schools throughout the State of Texas beginning at 11:59pm on March 20, 2020 and continuing through at least 11:59pm on April 3, 2020. The Attorney General recognizes that days when public bodies are closed and skeleton crew days are not counted as business days for the purposes of calculating response deadlines under the Texas Public Information Act. For these reasons, we currently are not processing open record requests. We will resume processing requests within the timeframe required by state law once school reopens and we have more than a skeleton crew available at our school facilities.

Freedom of Information Requests, sometimes called Open Records requests, are handled by the Executive Director of Compliance on behalf of the Superintendent. One exception involves student records. Requests for student records by that student's parent or guardian may be handled directly by the school campus. Requests for Special Education records may be submitted to the Special Programs Department. If any part of a written request for student records includes information that might be deemed private under state or federal law, the written request will be forwarded to the Superintendent's Office and ultimately to the Attorney General's Office for processing.

Winfree Academy Charter Schools works to meet information requests in compliance with state and federal laws. To the extent possible, requests are handled in the order they are received. By law, Winfree Academy Charter Schools has 10 business days to determine whether or not to seek an Attorney General's ruling regarding information that may be excepted from public disclosure.

Information requests should be made in writing and mailed to:
