Reading Department
Winfree Academy Charter High School offers three different reading courses that
address a wide range of reading, written and speaking components. Our reading
curriculum is categorized by the following descriptors.
Winfree Academy's reading program is not for all high school students. Based on a reading assessment and the individual needs of the student, they are placed into the reading curriculum accordingly. All of our reading courses will count as an elective credit towards the student's high school graduation credits.
- Phonemic Awareness-enables students to detect, segment, blend, and manipulate sound in spoken language.
- Phonics-blend sounds associated with letters into words and can separate words into component sounds for spelling and writing.
- Language Structure-prefixes, suffixes, roots, semantics (vocabulary, analogies), grammar, sentence structure and variation, and pragmatics (social use of language)
- Linguistic-proficiency and fluency with patterns of language.
