Individualized High School Curriculum
Winfree Academy Charter High Schools employs a mastery-based, individualized
learning system that allows for students to work at their own pace. Just like
four quarters make up a dollar, four quarters of curriculum make up a credit at
Winfree Academy Charter Schools. When a student has successfully completed two
quarters of work in a high school course, they earn 1/2 credit in that course.
Mastery learning does not focus on content, but on the process of mastering it. Teachers evaluate students based on small units of well-defined, appropriately sequenced outcomes. In the assessment of this work, teachers are looking for mastery. For most assignments, mastery is set at 70%. However, special assignments and those designed for acceleration may have a higher mastery standard assigned. If a student does not achieve mastery on their work the student must make corrections to the assignment. Students may complete corrections until mastery is achieved.
