ESL Department
Winfree Academy welcomes students from many nations and many cultures who are now living in the United States. About 10% to 15% of our students are learning English as part of their studies. Winfree Academy provides an education to English Language Learners that is consistent with high school graduation requirements. The education is provided by teachers who are highly qualified in their subject area (math, science, social studies, language arts) and who also have extra training in working with students who are learning English.. This an intensive program of instruction designed to develop proficiency in listening, reading, speaking and writing in English, as well as study skills for learning a language.
Most students learn basic and intermediate English for conversations in one to three years. However, learning to read, write, speak and listen with the high level English used for academic subjects can take 6 years for most students, longer for some. Most students seem to learn English best when they have a combination of regular classes for all students, and class time spent with teachers working specifically on learning English.
At the time of enrollment in Winfree Academy, every student is asked to complete a Home Language Survey and provide records from their previous schools that show whether or not the student is still learning English. By law, Winfree Academy has 20 school days to determine whether the student needs English as a Second Language (ESL) support.
The parent and the student will receive written notice of the test results and the recommended placement of the student. The parent is asked to sign a form agreeing that the student will be placed in the ESL program until the student meets the criteria for exit from the ESL program.
Once a student is in the ESL program, the student is assigned to teachers who are highly qualified in their subject area (math, science, social studies, language arts, etc.) and who also have received special training in working with ESL students. The student meets the same requirements for graduation as other students, learning English while also learning the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) in math, science, social studies, language arts and other requirements for graduation.
Each year, the student will be tested to check for progress in the developing proficiency in English, as well as academic progress. The results of those tests (TELPAS, Woodcock-Munoz, and TAKS) are given to the student and the parents each year, along with the recommendation on whether to continue in ESL or exit from ESL.
The criteria for exit from the ESL program are:
Once the student has exited from the ESL program, his/her academic progress will be monitored for two more school years to be sure that the exit decision was appropriate.
There are significant benefits that will be gained by your son/daughter when he/she participates in the English as a Second Language (ESL) education program. A teacher in the English as a Second Language education program has extra training in how to teach the English language using the correct materials and teaching techniques, and is sensitive to the individual needs of a student who is learning English. The teachers for your son/daughter collaborate to be sure your child will meet all the required state standards expected of all students and is also making progress in learning English.

- If past school records show that the student has mastered the English language and exited from the ESL program, then Winfree Academy will also show the student as fully English proficient.
- If no records from past schools are available, Winfree may test the student to determine if the student needs the ESL program. If the student scores a 1, 2 or 3 on the Woodcock-Munoz, then the student will receive ESL support in all classes.
- If the student scores a 4, 5 or 6 on the Woodcock-Munoz, then Winfree Academy will give the Stanford test. If the student scores in the 40th percentile or above, the student has proven mastery of the English language and will not need ESL support. If the student scores below the 40th percentile, then the student will receive ESL support.
