What is the program?

The Courage Program is a self-contained unit within Winfree Academy Charter Schools. The program offers a safe, supportive environment for students who are in recovery. Parents are often left in the dilemma of sending their student back into the school environment they found themselves in while using drugs and/or alcohol. Peer pressure and "using friends" make the already difficult process of recovery dangerously stressful. Placing a recovering teen in a supportive environment with other recovering students who have a desire for sobriety provides further opportunity for success. The program offers the student opportunities to attend "in school" AA/NA meetings, substance abuse education, and supportive groups. The curriculum, using a process of unique to our program, integrates recovery into the student's subject content. The students study in Literature, History, Science and Math, and relates activities to substance abuse.

Who can participate?

The Courage Program is completely FREE to enroll; indeed it is one of the only programs of its kind in the state of Texas. As part of the programs offered by Winfree Academy Charter Schools, any student living in Texas can attend without any cost to the student or parent. A Charter School is a Public School that is not tethered by traditional school boundaries and the States Foundation School Program provides funding. Once enrolled as a Winfree Academy student, any student who desires sobriety and is willing to commit to the guidelines of the Courage Program, may attend. We expect our students to commit to a sober lifestyle. Students are required to provide a clean urinalysis, attend AA/NA meetings, and maintain 90% attendance. We also expect families of students to attend family support classes held on campus twice a month.

When do students attend?

Students attend school from 8:30 am to 2:00 pm Monday through Thursday. On Friday the school day ends at 1:00 pm.
From 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm there is a Multi-Family Education Group:

  • NRH Campus - Monday
