Required assessment for graduation

STAAR (State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness)

The state of Texas is moving into their second year of administering End-of-Course assessments, which are replacing the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) exams. During the 2012-2013 school year, both ninth and tenth graders will be taking End-of-Course exams. Eleventh and twelfth graders will continue to participate in the TAKS exams.

10th TAKS STAAR STAAR STAAR
11th TAKS TAKS STAAR STAAR
12th TAKS TAKS TAKS STAAR

The STAAR test differs from the TAKS test through rigor, implementation, and graduation requirements. In order to graduate, students were required to pass four exit-level TAKS tests given at 11th grade. With the new STAAR system, the exit-level tests will be replaced with 12 End-of-Course (EOC) assessments, which students will take as they complete the corresponding course. In addition, a student’s score on the STAAR/EOC assessment will count 15 percent towards the student’s final grade in that course; which will go into effect 2012-2013.

**In Texas, grading policies are determined and implemented at the district level, and TEA does not have the authority to mandate district grading policies that would govern how students’ final grades are determined. School districts and open-enrollment charter schools have been charged with determining the 15% model that will work best for their students and school system.

Winfree Academy Charter School has formed a STAAR committee to prepare for the implementation of these exams. This committee has analyzed schedules, curriculum, benchmarking, and student needs to help make our students’ transition into this new system a success.
